Shoemaker Elementary School students celebrating Read Across America Day
Activities to promote reading are scheduled every day March 1 through March 5 at Shoemaker Elementary School to celebrate Read Across America, Principal Toni Palmer said.
The National Education Association's Read Across America is an annual reading awareness and motivation program to celebrate reading on March 2, which is Dr. Seuss's birthday.
The names of the daily events at Shoemaker are Celebrate Read Across America (March 1), Celebrate Dr. Seuss (March 2), Celebrate Books (March 3), Celebrate Reading Buddies (March 4), and Celebrate Nebraska (March 5).
Activities scheduled at Shoemaker include:
*March 1: 2 p.m., Smitty's Dance Team performance in gym, kick-off event; 2:45 p.m., spring celebrations in classrooms with snacks and stories.
*March 2: Wear a Dr. Seuss hat to school and bring your favorite Dr. Seuss book to school.
*March 3: 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Reading Restaurant for second-grade students. Parents and families are invited. They will receive a menu of books and comment on students' reading fluency. Students will be wearing black and white and have practiced being "waiters" to "serve" the books.
*March 4: Students will read with classes in different grade levels at the school.
*March 5: Students will wear Nebraska shirts or read. Teachers will include books about Nebraska, a famous Nebraskan, or a Nebraska author in read-aloud sessions.
