Reptile specialist will speak at Seedling Mile Elementary School
Professional herpetologist and non-fiction author David M. Nieves will give presentations at Seedling Mile Elementary School on Friday, April 24, for the school's Young Authors' Day, Principal Lee Wolfe said.
Nieves will speak to various student groups between 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. April 24 in the school's gym at 3208 E. Seedling Mile Road, Wolfe said. The purposes of the event are to encourage and inspire students to enjoy writing and to teach them techniques to improve writing.
Nieves incorporates the six traits of writing into his presentations. The six traits of writing are Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions.
Nieves became fascinated with reptiles and amphibians starting at age 8 when he was growing up in Bellevue, Nebr. Now, Nieves travels to other countries to research and photograph these creatures.
He has written two non-fiction children's books: "Reptiles Up Close" and "More Reptiles Up Close." Nieves presents programs at schools, libraries, zoos, nature centers, and museums.
