'Parent University' offered to explain benefits of higher education

The Grand Island Public Schools is sponsoring a seminar this month called "Parent University."

The seminar is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29 at Grand Island Senior High School's north cafeteria, said Joanne Garrison, coordinator of the Grand Island Public Schools Welcome Center.

The purpose of Parent University is to help parents of students who speak a language other than English understand the American education system and how to succeed in high school and beyond. The seminar is open to 23 students who have been nominated by the teachers or staff at Grand Island Senior High School for their leadership potential. The remaining two sessions for Parent University for the same students will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 26.

Student leaders from the high school will speak at the seminar about their experiences in high school and offer motivation to their peers to have goals and to know they can succeed in high school.

Spanish translation will be available. Parents are welcome to bring children with them to Parent University.

Parent University is funded through a grant from EducationQuest Foundation.
