'Parent University' offered to explain benefits of higher education
The Grand Island Public Schools is launching a new seminar this month called "Parent University."
The
three-session seminar begins Jan. 31 at Grand Island Senior High
School, said Joanne Garrison, coordinator of the Grand Island Public
Schools Welcome Center.
The purpose of Parent University is to
educate parents about how they can help their children reach their
goals and dreams in life through postsecondary education.
The
school district, Grand Island Senior High School, and the Welcome
Center are sponsoring Parent University, which is free for
participants. Targeted participants are parents of high school students
who are English Language Learners, Garrison said.
The three
sessions for Parent University at Grand Island Senior High School will
be: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31; 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28; and 5
to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 27, she said.
Each class will begin
with a complimentary dinner and time to meet other parents and school
district staff members. Informational presentations will be from 6 p.m.
to 7 p.m. each night. Topics for each session are: January: importance
of parent/teacher communication and parent teacher conferences;
February: options and requirements for postsecondary education; and
March: opportunities and educational requirements for various
professions.
Spanish translation will be available. Parents are welcome to bring children with them to Parent University.
The
number of participants is limited, and people may register for Parent
University by calling the Grand Island Public Schools Welcome Center at
