Newell Elementary School students collect items for Salvation Army

Newell Elementary School students have collected 819 items including coats, canned goods, and toys that will be delivered to the Salvation Army at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17.

The items were collected through Newell's Giving Tree program, said Carrie Marx, a counselor at the school.

"This year, Newell Elementary School has focused on character education and its six pillars: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, caring, fairness, and citizenship," Marx said. "During the months of November and December, we really focused lessons on caring."

Students made "caring hands" from paper to share how they are going to be kind to others. The hands were used to create a Giving Tree in the hallway with the motto, "Caring Hands -- Caring Hearts."

Newell's Student Council set a goal of collecting 437 items for the Salvation Army, which was one item per student. Newell surpassed that goal by collecting 819 items.

Student Council members counted the number of new items that were donated each morning, and the total was posted on a giant heart on a bulletin board in the hall.  Principal Brad Wolfe and School Secretary Gail Baack also announced donation totals each morning over the school intercom and through ConnectED automated phone reminders.

Verna Haberman, outreach coordinator for Grand Island Public Schools, read some books in each Newell classroom regarding giving and helping others "which made a big impact on our students," Marx said.
