New members join Grand Island Education Foundation Board

Three new members have joined the Grand Island Education Foundation Board of Directors, said Foundation Board President Brad Fegley.

Joining the Foundation Board are Barbara Anderson, Vikki Deuel, and Kurt Haecker.

"We are pleased to welcome these three quality individuals to the Foundation Board. They each bring different talents and skills but share a common passion for education," said Fegley. 

"The Grand Island Education Foundation is blessed with a very supportive community that understands the value of quality public education. Those joining the Board are individuals who have long histories of participation in the growth and betterment of our community," Executive Director Traci Skalberg said.

Barbara Anderson is currently a substitute teacher for the Grand Island Public Schools. She is a lifelong Grand Island resident and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has served as a deacon at the First Presbyterian Church. Anderson has also been involved in the Grand Island Kennel Club Board of Directors, PTA, and served as a 4-H Leader. Anderson held the office of President of PEO, Chapter EZ, and currently volunteers at the Grand Island Veterans Home doing pet therapy.  Prior to her retirement, Anderson owned Stat Patient Aids-Direct Medical Equipment Store and later served as a program/human resource coordinator for the Crisis Center. 

Vikki Deuel is an instructor for the College of Education at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. She recently retired from the Grand Island Public Schools after 37 years at Walnut Middle School, where she had served in many roles, including working as Walnut's principal since 1990. Deuel has published papers regarding character education and teaching respect and responsibility in the middle school environment. She is a national board member of the "Hands and Words are Not for Hurting Project" of Salem, Ore., and a past board member of the Nebraska Department of Education Anti-Bullying Task Force. Deuel has also served as a board member of the Grand Island YMCA and Women's Health Services.

Kurt Haecker is employed as vice-president for business banking at Home Federal Bank. He has lived and worked in Grand Island for more than 20 years. Haecker has served many community agencies and is currently a member of the College Park Board, Downtown Improvement Board, Grand Island Rotary Club, Grand Island Sports Council, Nebraska Diplomats, and the Stuhr Museum Foundation Board. Haecker is also a trustee for the Saint Francis Medical Center Foundation and serves as treasurer of the Nebraska Chapter of The Nature Conservancy and Grace Lutheran Church. 

Others serving on the Grand Island Education Foundation Board of Directors are Cathleen H. Allen, George Ayoub, Patricia Brown, Linna Dee Donaldson, Brad Fegley, Steve Gleason, Katie Goering, John M. Hoggatt, Jim Kahrhoff, Ann Marsh, Jane Richardson, and Lynne Werner.  Ex-officio members are Dr. Steve Joel, Carol Bryant, Virgil Harden, Dr. Kent Mann, Kari Price, and Executive Director Traci Skalberg.

The Grand Island Education Foundation is the tax-exempt organization that accepts gifts on behalf of the Grand Island Public Schools.  Since the Grand Island Education Foundation's inception in 1983, its mission and goal are to enhance a tax-funded education by creating additional opportunities for students through philanthropic means. Programs and projects that fall under the Education Foundation's enhancement umbrella include booster clubs, college scholarships for Grand Island Senior High School's top-rated students, facility enhancement, teacher and student recognition, alumni relations, the Grand Island Senior High School Hall of Honor, and the Classroom Mini-Grant Program.
