Nebraska Humanities Council speaker to appear at Knickrehm Elementary School
Darrel Draper of Omaha will present historical monologues about Peter Sarpy and George Drouillard, two figures in Nebraska history, at Knickrehm Elementary School on April 14 and April 15.
Draper's first presentation for fourth-graders about Peter Sarpy will begin at 1 p.m. Monday, April 14, in Knickrehm's cafeteria. Sarpy was a pioneer, fur trader, and namesake for Sarpy County, Nebraska. Sarpy operated a steam ferry from Iowa to the Oregon, Mormon, and California Gold Rush trailheads; helped publish a newspaper; created a bank; helped negotiate favorable treaties with the Indians; and laid out the streets of Bellevue.
Draper's presentation for fifth-graders about George Drouillard will start at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, in Knickrehm's cafeteria. Drouillard, who was half French and half Shawnee Indian, was a valuable member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Each presentation is approximately 45 minutes long.
The presentations are made possible by the Nebraska Humanities Council and Knickrehm Elementary School as part of the Nebraska Humanities Council Speakers Bureau. The Nebraska Humanities Council receives support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Nebraska Legislature, the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, and private donations.
The programs are two of approximately 300 programs offered through the Nebraska Humanities Council Speakers Bureau. More than 165 speakers are available, making it the largest humanities speakers bureau in the nation.
