Military pen pal will visit West Lawn Elementary School students
A U.S. Army sergeant stationed in Iraq will visit with students who were his pen pals during the spring of 2009 on Oct. 8 at West Lawn Elementary School.
Fourth-grade teacher Josa Wilkinson's uncle is U.S. Army Master Sergeant Larry Wiedel of Raleigh, N.C. Wilkinson taught fifth grade during the 2008-09 school year, and her students were pen pals with Wiedel during the second semester.
Wiedel will meet with the students, who are now sixth-graders, at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the school at 3022 W. College St. They will have a meal together, and then Wiedel will give a presentation to the students. He will also present West Lawn Elementary School with a U.S. flag that was flown at Balad Airbase in northern Iraq.
The students e-mailed to Wiedel and also sent him a care package that included Valentine's Day cards and candy.
Wiedel is scheduled to return to the United States on Sept. 3, Wilkinson said. He has served in the military for 37 years.
