Middle schools sponsoring chili cook-off, parent awareness presentation
Parent Teacher Organizations for Barr, Walnut, and Westridge Middle Schools are sponsoring a chili cook-off and parent awareness presentation on Monday, Dec. 8, at the school.
The chili cook-off will begin at 6 p.m. Dec. 8, followed by a parent awareness meeting at 7 p.m. Dec. 8 concerning gang identification, said Julie Schlachter, a school social worker at Walnut Middle School.
The purposes of the chili cook-off and parent presentation are to raise money for the three schools' Parent Teacher Organizations (PTO); to show a partnership involving the three middle schools; and to bring parents, teachers, and children together for fun, fellowship, networking, and education on topics relevant to adolescents.
In the chili cook-off, families will eat and vote for their favorite chili by placing a quarter in a bucket for their favorite chili. Proceeds will go to the school's PTO. The chili provider with the most money in its bucket will be considered the winner and will receive a trophy to display at the affiliated school.
After the chili cook-off, Sgt. Jim Duering with the Grand Island Police Department will give a presentation about gang identification and awareness for parents. This will assist parents in recognizing gang activity and what to do if they have concerns about their children or children's friends. During the presentation for parents, childcare and supervised activities for older children will be available in the school's gym.
