Math for Moms and Dads event offered at Shoemaker and Wasmer Elementary Schools
A Math for Moms and Dads event is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, and Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Shoemaker and Wasmer Elementary Schools.
The Grand Island Education Association is sponsoring the event as part of its Public Engagement Project, said Deb Gnuse, GIEA president and a fourth-grade teacher at Wasmer Elementary School. Although the event is targeting parents of Shoemaker and Wasmer students, the event is open to the public. Parent-teacher conferences will be occurring at the schools at the same time.
"Each grade level will have a 'booth' that the parents can visit," Gnuse said.
Shoemaker Elementary School is located at 4160 Old Potash Highway, and Wasmer Elementary School is located at 318 S. Clark St.
Grand Island Senior High School students who have volunteered to be math tutors will teach parents skills that they can then use to help their children at home.
"For example, at the fourth-grade booth, they will teach the parents how to do the 'all partials' method of multiplication. Most adults were never taught that way," Gnuse said.
As a prize for attending, at each booth, parents will receive a tool to use at home. For example, at the third-grade booth, participants will study how to tell what time it is. Parents at that booth will get a small clock to take home to use for practice telling time.
Students from Central Community College will provide free child care for children age 2 through second grade.
"This will allow parents to attend parent-teacher conferences without distractions," Gnuse said.
"The funding to provide the child care and the prizes is part of the Public Engagement Project grant that began last year through the National Education Association. We're hoping that it will be a huge success and can be implemented in more schools next fall," she said.
