Grand Island, Nebraska: Every Student, Every Day, A Success!
Three Grand Island Public Schools students are among 13 students statewide whose artwork will be featured in the 2010 "Nebraska: Don't Waste It" calendar sponsored by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality.
Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy will visit the schools that the Grand Island students attend on Sept. 8. He will visit:
*Walnut Middle School, 1600 N. Custer Ave., at 1 p.m. Sept. 8. Contest winners who attend Walnut are sixth-graders Austin Cornelius and Mariola Sanchez. Cornelius and Sanchez were fifth-graders at Knickrehm Elementary School when they entered the contest.
*Starr Elementary School, 315 Wyandotte St., at 1:45 p.m. Sept. 8. A contest winner who attends Starr is first-grader Hannah Standlea. The statewide contest focused on the importance of waste reduction, recycling, and litter cleanup.
The students whose submissions were selected for the 2010 calendar were invited to a ceremony at the State Capitol on Aug. 13, where Sheehy and NDEQ Director Mike Linder honored them. Each month, the calendar will feature one of the 12 winning environmental posters. A 13th winner's artwork will be featured on the calendar's cover.
