Islander debaters end winning season with third place sweepstakes award
Grand Island Senior High School's Debate Team completed their season March 28 at the National Forensic League Nebraska National Qualifiers Debate at Raymond Central and won a third-place team sweepstakes award, Coach Deb Lawson said.
At the March 28 competition, Kandice Jeffers and Becca Preisendorf both won second place and were named first alternates to represent the state at the national championships in Birmingham, Ala. Kolten Wall was the second alternate to nationals. In addition, Tyler Pierce won first place presiding officer, Eduardo Cruz earned seventh place in the Senate, and Rose Hayes won first place presiding officer in the House.
The Islander debaters competed at the Lincoln Northeast Congress Debate Tournament on Feb. 28. Nhi Nguyen won a first place speaker trophy. Tristen Hopkins won fourth place, and Hannah Vahle was selected first in her House and earned fifth place. These novice debaters will advance to varsity competition next year.
The debaters competed at the Nebraska Speech Communication and Theater Association State Debate in Kearney on March 14. Eduardo Cruz and Kolten Wall qualified for Super Congress, and Wall also won a first place presiding officer award. In Honors Congress, Becca Preisendorf was first place presiding officer, and Nhi Nguyen placed second.
