Information night offered for parents of secondary school students
A Colorado woman who co-created a nationally known abstinence and relationship public school curriculum will lead a parent education night for parents of secondary school students from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Barr Middle School's auditorium.
The event is open to the public, and there is no admission charge. Barr Middle School is located at 602 W. Stolley Park Road.
Shelly Donahue, co-creator of WAIT (Why Am I Tempted?) curriculum, will also conduct two days of training for Grand Island Public Schools family and consumer science teachers about dating violence and healthy relationships. The Grand Island teachers will then instruct secondary students and staff about the topics.
Donahue is a 19-year veteran high school health and P.E. teacher and volleyball, basketball, and track coach. Since 1995, she's presented approximately 50 WAIT trainings for teachers and more than 100 secondary and college WAIT training assemblies and parent education meetings throughout the nation every year.
In 2000, she moved to Eaton, Colo., and incorporated WAIT training into 13 high schools and 16 middle schools in Weld County. She has also developed a medical model of sexual cessation for sexually active teens, empowering them to return to a healthy lifestyle.
Nebraska Legislative Bill 63 required Nebraska school districts to adopt a policy by July 1 concerning dating violence involving students in their schools. The Board of Education for Grand Island Public Schools adopted a dating violence prevention policy on June 10 stating that the school district will provide training for staff and incorporate into its educational program age-appropriate dating violence education that will include defining dating violence, recognizing dating violence warning signs, and identifying characteristics of healthy dating relationships.
Saint Francis Medical Center received a Mission and Ministry Fund Grant from Catholic Health Initiatives for Grand Island Public Schools that is funding Donahue's work in Grand Island.
