Howard Elementary School will host Chinese culture presentations coordinated by the Nebraska Department of Education on Wednesday, Nov. 12, Principal Julie Schnitzler said.
Six representatives from China will give the presentations at the school at 502 W. Ninth St. The College Board is sponsoring the event as an opportunity to foster students' interest in Chinese culture and language. The Nebraska Department of Education is coordinating the presentations in the state, said Mardi North with the Nebraska Department of Education.
Students in third grade through fifth grade will attend a presentation titled "An Introduction to Chinese Culture" from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Nov. 12 at the school. Topics will include Chinese history, geography, cultural traditions, and modern development. A sampling of Chinese arts, such as calligraphy, painting, martial arts, or folk music, may be introduced. A question-and-answer period will follow the presentation.
Fifth-graders will attend a second presentation from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Nov. 12 called "Demonstration Chinese Class," which includes a lesson in Mandarin Chinese, including basic Chinese pronunciation and how to write Chinese characters. Short games and traditional Chinese paper art activities may be included.
Schools throughout Nebraska applied to host the Chinese culture presentations. Eleven schools were selected to host the presentations during the week of Nov. 10.
