Howard Elementary School and City Library sponsoring literacy program for parents

Howard Elementary School and the Grand Island Public Library are launching a literacy program for parents with children 3 or 4 years old, Principal Julie Schnitzler said.

Parents of 3- and 4-year-old children and their children who live in Howard Elementary School’s attendance area will be invited to participate in the program.

The program will be offered from 8:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. every Tuesday starting Aug. 23 at Howard Elementary School, 502 W. Ninth St. The program will continue meeting weekly throughout the school year.

“”Our goal is to teach parents how to teach pre-literacy skills to their preschool-age children,” Schnitzler said.

The City Library will provide an instructor for the program, and Howard Elementary School will provide books that it received through the Reading Is Fundamental program. Celine Swan, youth services librarian for the Grand Island Public Library, is working with Howard’s staff to operate the program.

For further information about the literacy program, please call Howard Elementary School at 385-5916 or Celine Swan at the Grand Island Public Library at 385-5333.
