Howard Elementary considers continuous calendar

Some reluctance and trepidation, at least one strong endorsement, lots of interest, curiosity and questions.

Those were a few of the reactions Tuesday evening during meeting at Howard Elementary where parents listened to Principal Julie Schnitzler explain the school district's plans to have the K-5 school be the first one in Grand Island to try a continuous school calendar.

The interest was apparent because the commons area at Howard was filled with parents who came to hear Schnitzler's presentation.

The reluctance of some people to participate in the continuous calendar seemed evident from questions about whether parents would be able to transfer their children to other schools, the time period when such transfer requests could be made and whether it was possible for Howard to revert to a traditional calendar if the continuous calendar didn't work out.

The endorsement came from a parent who found it a continuous calendar to be beneficial for the family's children.  Full Story
