Groups sponsoring meeting about community involvement in schools

The Grand Island Education Association, Grand Island Public Schools, Grand Island Young Professionals, Leadership Tomorrow, and the Grand Island Multicultural Coalition are hosting their second round of community conversations on Sept. 24.

Registration and dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at Wasmer Elementary School, 318 S. Clark St., said Deb Gnuse, president of the Grand Island Education Association. The event will conclude by 8 p.m. Sept. 24.

"Last spring, we held our first community conversation, focusing on the graduation/drop-out rate in Grand Island. Participants discussed three possible areas. The overwhelming result was that there needed to be more community involvement in the schools, and the schools need to be more involved in the community," Gnuse said.

"We are trying to get a 'slice' of the population of Grand Island so all ethnicities and cultures are represented," she said. For last spring's community conversation, organizers used lists from different organizations to generate an invitation list.

"This time, each building principal was asked to target five to 10 families in their school that they thought would represent them. The high school principals invited students. The response to invitations has been phenomenal," Gnuse said. So far, 65 people have indicated they would attend, and less than half of the schools have reported who would attend representing their schools.

The meeting will focus on two topics: ways the community can become more involved in the schools and ways the schools can become more involved in the community.

"Following our conversation, all the ideas will be compiled, and our core committee will look at the suggestions and come up with a plan of action," Gnuse said.
