Grand Island Public Schools hosting Sing Around Nebraska Honor Choir Festival
Grand Island is one of 12 sites for the 10th biannual Sing Around Nebraska Honor Choir Festival on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Grand Island Senior School, said Charity LaBrie, music teacher at Wasmer Elementary School.
Approximately 250 students from Grand Island and surrounding communities will perform at a public concert at 4 p.m. Feb. 20 at Grand Island Senior High School's auditorium at 2124 N. Lafayette Ave. Concert tickets are $3 per person for adults and children more than 12 years old. Children 12 and under accompanied by an adult will be admitted for free. LaBrie and Marti Sanchez, another Grand Island Public Schools music teacher, are coordinating the local event.
The Nebraska Choral Director's Association sponsors the event for students in fourth grade through sixth grade. Each school's music teacher may select two to 10 fourth-grade through sixth-grade students to participate.
Students at all 12 sites will perform six selected songs. The songs are "Festival Sanctus," "Art Thou Troubled," "J'entends Le Moulin," "Old Joe Clark," "Ja-Da," and "Inscription of Hope."
Purposes of Sing Around Nebraska are to provide students with an exciting and quality choral experience, to give students who are ready for more challenging music the opportunity to work with a guest clinician, to give music teachers the chance to observe and learn from the clinician working with the students, and to sing quality children's choral repertoire. More than 1,600 students participated in the Sing Around Nebraska Honor Choir Festival the last time it occurred in 2008.
