Governor will visit Knickrehm Elementary School to recognize ag poster contest winners
Gov. Dave Heineman will visit Knickrehm Elementary School at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 14, to recognize four students who won awards in the Nebraska Department of Agriculture’s annual poster contest.
Teacher Diane Meyer’s fifth-grade students swept the fifth- and sixth-grade division in the poster contest, winning all awards. The students are: Skylar Balent, first place; Nettie VanHeufeln, second place; Mayra Almayra, third place; and Christian Sanchez, Governor’s Choice Award.
In its eighth year, the contest generated 1,573 entries from first- through sixth-grade students from across Nebraska. This year’s theme was: “Nebraska Agriculture: Caring for Animals and the Earth Every Day,” Nebraska Department of Agriculture Director Greg Ibach said.
The contest celebrates National Ag Week, and contest winners were announced March 15. The winning posters can be viewed on the Nebraska Department of Agriculture’s website at: www.agr.state.ne.us/kids/11poster.htm
Meyer said the last time her students won all awards in the fifth- and sixth-grade division of the poster contest was in 2007. Knickrehm Elementary School is located at 2013 N. Oak St.
