Gov. Heineman and First Lady to visit Howard Elementary School
Gov. Dave Heineman and First Lady Sally Ganem will visit Howard Elementary School at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, to recognize a student who purchased and distributed calculators for other Howard students.
Fourth-grade student Madisyn Springer used $17 of her own money to purchase calculators for classmates in teacher Jane Kipper's classroom that were distributed around Thanksgiving.
Grand Island Senior High School math teacher Patrick Harder heard about Springer's actions. He and friends raised $100 and gave it to Springer just before Christmas to buy more calculators for Howard students.
Skagway, where Springer purchased the first calculators for $1 each, donated 50 more calculators, and an anonymous donor contributed another 40 calculators. Springer distributed the additional 190 calculators to Howard students on Jan. 20.
