G.I. Senior High School students collect items for Salvation Army's Food Pantry
Grand
Island Senior High School students donated 950 food items, including 11
turkeys, in December to the Salvation Army's Food Pantry.
The
school's Student Council organized the Holiday Canned Food Drive, said
Barry Skalberg, a staff advisor for the Student Council.
Students were asked to bring nonperishable food items to their homerooms throughout the week of Dec. 10 through Dec. 14.
Each
class was given a box to fill and was encouraged to decorate or wrap
the box. Students in homerooms that had the best decorated boxes or
donated the most food items at each grade level received cookies.
Student
Council members collected, counted, and sorted the food items on Dec.
14. They filled 11 boxes with frozen turkeys and side items so that 11
families could receive everything needed for a holiday feast. The
filled boxes and all other items were given to the Food Pantry.
