GIPS students involved in activities to help hungry or homeless people
Grand Island Public Schools students are involved in a variety of activities in November for National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week Nov. 14 through Nov. 20, said Verna Haberman, outreach coordinator for the school district.
During the week, students from Barr and Walnut Middle Schools will collect toilet paper for Hope Harbor and Central Nebraska Community Services.
"Dine United" will occur on Nov. 16 at participating local restaurants, which will give a percentage of proceeds to the city's homeless shelters.
During November, Haberman is reading the book "Cooper's Tale" at elementary schools in Grand Island. The book is a story about a mouse who lost his house. Her reading schedule includes:
*Nov. 9: Walnut Middle School and Stolley Park, Lincoln, and West Lawn Elementary Schools
*Nov. 10: Jefferson Elementary School
*Nov. 11: Seeding Mile and Stolley Park Elementary Schools
*Nov. 16: Newell Elementary School
*Nov. 17: Howard Elementary School
*Nov. 18, Nov. 22, and Nov. 23: Newell Elementary School
The National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness co-sponsor National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week.
