GIPS schools participating in mock election

Students in eight schools in the Grand Island Public Schools are participating in Nebraska Student Vote, a program for students in kindergarten through 12th grade that combines civics instruction with a mock election.

For instance, Dodge Elementary School students in kindergarten through fifth grade will participate in the mock election the morning of Oct. 29, Principal Stephanie Schulte said. Votes will be counted in the afternoon and submitted to Nebraska Student Vote through its Web site.

The program is conducted every two years in connection with the November general election and is sponsored by Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale and the Omaha World-Herald. Other schools in the Grand Island Public Schools listed on the Nebraska Student Vote Web site as participants are Howard, Jefferson, Shoemaker, and Gates Elementary Schools; Barr and Walnut Middle Schools; and Grand Island Senior High School.

Students statewide are casting their votes on paper ballots in a mock election for three federal offices -- president, Senate, and House of Representatives. Results will be reported on the Nebraska Student Vote Web site (www.nestudentvote.com) and sent to the National Mock Election program.

The Secretary of State's Office and the Omaha World-Herald launched Nebraska Student Vote in 1996. It is hoped that students who participate in the program will be more likely to become active citizens and lifelong voters.
