Gates Elementary School students win recycling contest
Gates Elementary School students have won a recycling contest to collect plastic and will receive $1,000 from the South Wal-Mart for their efforts, Principal Julie Martin said.
Gates students competed against students from other area schools last spring to see which school could collect the most plastic bags and plastic wrap.
"The school's goal of collecting 800 pounds was greatly surpassed, and many joined in the project to take a stand," Martin said. Gates students collected 2,444 pounds of plastic bags and plastic wrap.
Gates fourth-grade teacher Patsy Steenson leads the Gates Kids for Saving Earth Club, which organized Gates' participation in the project.
The school will receive $1,000 at 9 a.m. Sept. 11 at the South Wal-Mart, Martin said. Each Grand Island Wal-Mart donated $1,000 to the school that could collect the most plastic, as well as money to the second- and third-place finishers.
