Gates Elementary School presenting Literacy Night
Gates Elementary School is sponsoring a Literacy Night for its students and their families starting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 6, at the school at 2700 W. Louise St.
"The purpose of Literacy Night is to promote reading outside of the school day. It also encourages students to visit about what they are reading with their parents. Most importantly, it assists parents when helping their child at home. They will see how to use reading strategies utilized at school to help their child gain an understanding of the texts they are reading at home," Gates Principal Julie Martin said.
A version of the Winnie the Pooh story written by Gates staff members that includes reading comprehension strategies will be performed at the Literacy Night, Martin said. Teachers in costume will portray the roles of the Winnie the Pooh characters.
Staff members have also rewritten a song to include reading strategies. The song has been made into a video complete with dance moves from everyone in the school, including custodians, Martin said.
Riddles and jokes about reading will be included in the night's activities. Families will receive a handout that reinforces the reading strategies to use at home. Popcorn will be served, and door prizes for families will be offered.
The Literacy Night activities will last for approximately one hour, Martin said. A book fair will also be offered at Gates on April 6, and book sales will continue after the Literacy Night until approximately 8 p.m. April 6.
