G.I. woman wins $2,000 in Walnut Outdoor Learning Club Raffle
Lois Sextro of Grand Island won the Walnut Middle School Outdoors and Kids Club 2009 Boat Raffle.

The raffle began in April, and the winner's raffle ticket was drawn June 27 at the Boat Dock.
Sextro, an avid supporter of outdoor recreation and Grand Island students, donated a portion of her winnings back to the Walnut Outdoor Learning Club, which sponsored the raffle as a fund-raiser.
Approximately 800 raffle tickets were sold in the tiered prize program. If the maximum number of 2,500 raffle tickets had been sold, the grand prize was listed as $5,000 cash or a boating package donated in part by the Boat Dock.
The boating package included a 2008 Tuffy Esox boat and trailer, a 2008 Suzuki outboard motor, a 2008 Minn Kota trolling motor, and a 2008 Lowrance depth finder.
Walnut counselor Jeff Westerby and teachers Tyler Madison and Paul Walkowiak sponsor the Outdoor Learning Club. The club is comprised of approximately 50 sixth- through eighth-grade students who meet twice weekly during the school year to learn a variety of skills relating to outdoor recreational activities. Skills including outdoor cooking, ice fishing, camping, canoeing, archery, wildlife viewing, outdoor photography, fish identification, boating safety, and conservation.
The lessons are designed to create a sense of enjoyment and responsibility for natural resources and to give at-risk students a connection to school that will ultimately improve grades, attitudes, and attendance. The students take several mini-trips and an overnight camping trip that are available at no cost to them.
The Walnut Outdoor Learning Club is a member of the Grand Island Education Foundation. The Grand Island Education Foundation is the tax-exempt organization that accepts gifts on behalf of the Grand Island Public Schools. Since the Grand Island Education Foundation's inception in 1983, its mission and goal are to enhance a tax-funded education by creating additional opportunities for students through philanthropic means.
