G.I. Senior High School students participate in SkillsUSA conference

Grand Island Senior High School's Skills USA chapter participated in the Nebraska Leadership and Skills Conference on March 27 to March 29.

Students competed in the carpentry, technical drafting, architectural drafting, metal inert gas (MIG) welding, and tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding divisions.

Three Grand Island students received medals, said Mark Brei, career and technical education department chairman at the high school.
Leslie Steele placed third in architectural drafting. Adam Straight was first in technical drafting, and Cody Friedrichsen finished first in carpentry. Straight and Friedrichsen qualified for the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in June in Kansas City, Mo, where they will compete against winners from the other 49 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

SkillsUSA is an organization for students involved in career and technical education courses at their high schools. SkillsUSA students are preparing for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. It was formerly known as VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America).
