G.I. Senior High School students conduct food drive
Grand Island Senior High School students collected more than 1,000 food items in December to donate to needy families and the Salvation Army's Food Pantry.
The school's Student Council organized the annual Holiday Canned Food Drive, which surpassed last year's total, said Barry Skalberg, a staff advisor for the Student Council.
OASIS groups (similar to homerooms) that donated the most food items at each grade level will receive cookies in January.
Student Council members collected, counted, and sorted the food items on Dec. 19. They filled 40 totes with frozen turkeys and side items so that 40 families could receive everything needed for a holiday feast. Totes were delivered to students at every elementary school and middle school in the Grand Island Public Schools. The remaining items were given to the Food Pantry.
Student Council President Cole Kruger, senior Rachel Weakland, and junior Hannah Luber led the project. Student Council faculty advisers are Barry Skalberg and Mary Homan.
OASIS group winners, listed by teacher's name, for the most food items donated were: freshmen, teacher Joe Watkins and Amy Voss's class, 33 items; sophomores, teacher Deb Heyen's class, 82 items; juniors, teacher Dee Krolikowski's class, 84 items; and seniors, teacher Betsy Uhing's class, 86 items.
