G.I. Senior High School students compete in Health Occupations Students of America contest
Grand Island Senior High School students competed in the state Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) contest March 25 and March 26 at the state leadership conference in Omaha.
HOSA's mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. Grand Island Senior High School's HOSA chapter has 38 members and is the second largest chapter in the state, said Karen Kropp, a Family and Consumer Science teacher who sponsors the group. Nine students from the high school attended the conference.
Students who placed in the top three in each division are eligible to compete in HOSA's National Leadership Conference in June in Orlando, Fla., Kropp said.
Grand Island Senior High School students who placed in the state competition were:
*Career Health Display: 1, Steven Cahoy and Christina Nguyen
*Creative Problem Solving: 1, Eduardo Cruz, Danielle Bartels, Christina Nguyen, and Courtney Cahoy
*Medical Spelling: 2, Danielle Bartels
*Knowledge Test in Human Development: 5, Kallie Rother
*Extemporaneous Writing: 5, Bri Pauly
*Researched Persuasive Speaking: 1, Eduardo Cruz
*Prepared Speaking: 2, Christina Nguyen; 5, Eduardo Cruz
*Extemporaneous Speaking: 1, Eduardo Cruz
Courtney Cahoy was recognized at the state conference as the outstanding member from the Grand Island Senior High School chapter, where she is the president. She is also a HOSA state officer, serving as historian. Other Grand Island officers are Christina Nguyen, vice president; and Danielle Bartels, secretary/treasurer.
Grand Island chapter members participated in the HOSA Fall Leadership Conference and National HOSA Week and hosted the Mid-Winter HOSA meeting at College Park in partnership with the Central Nebraska Area Health Education Center.
