G.I. Senior High School sophomore receives highest possible score on ACT

Grand Island Senior High School sophomore Preston Fegley has received the highest score possible on the ACT, a national college admission and placement examination.

Fegley received a 36 score on the ACT, said Grand Island Senior High School Counselor Larry Uhing. Fegley is among 19 Grand Island Senior High School students who received a score of 30 or above on the ACT.

"In the past, we have had students post a 35 on the ACT. This is the first student to score a 36 in my 19 years at Senior High.  Scoring a 36 is a remarkable achievement.  To do so as a sophomore is incredible," Grand Island Senior High School Principal Kent Mann said.

Less than one-tenth of 1 percent of 2010 high school graduates scored a 36, according to ACT's website www.act.org.

Fegley's mother, Jodi Fegley, said that her son took the ACT on Sept. 11 at the high school and received his results in the mail on Sept. 24.

Preston Fegley first took the ACT when he was in seventh grade at Walnut Middle School as part of the Duke University Talent Identification Program. Kim Madison and Janet Schutz, integration specialists at Walnut, encouraged him to take the ACT then, Jodi Fegley said. He received a 33 score as a seventh-grader and was among 17 students named by Duke University as a Bevan Scholar in 2008, she said. The Bevan Scholars' scores on the tests placed them in the 99.97 percentile of Duke Talent Search participants.

Fegley received a 34 score as an eighth-grader and 35 as a ninth-grader, Uhing said.

Preston Fegley is uncertain where he would like to go to college or what career he would like to pursue, Jodi Fegley said.

Senior Sarah Mirza received a 35 on the ACT.

Only 4 percent of high school graduates since 2008 who took the ACT scored 30 or above, according to ACT. Other Grand Island Senior High School students who received a 30 or above on the ACT, (listed alphabetically by grade with score) are:

Seniors: Chance Christensen, 31; Christopher Heineman, 33; Ben Holloway, 32; Kandice Jeffers, 31; Mekenzie Keenportz, 30; Manuel Medina, 31; Becca Preisendorf, 31; Breanne Preisendorf, 30; Colby Roseberry, 31; Sidney Smith, 31; Sarabeth Swift, 31; Hannah Vahle, 32; Addie Voss, 32; and Kaitlyn Worthington, 30.
