G.I. Public Schools won't serve peanut butter products until further notice

The Grand Island Public Schools Nutrition Services Department will not serve peanut butter or products containing peanut butter until the Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration determine that it is safe to do so.

This is due to the recent Salmonella food poisoning outbreak that has been linked to foods that contain peanut butter, said Kris Spellman, director of nutrition services for the Grand Island Public Schools.

"To help protect your children, we ask that parents NOT send any peanut butter-containing foods to school with your child for a snack or lunch," Spellman said.
She referred to advice from the FDA and CDC for consumers:

*Don't eat recalled products. Throw them away in a manner that prevents others from     eating them. A continuously updated list of products may be found on the FDA web site at http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/salmonellatyph.html#products
*Postpone eating other peanut butter-containing products (such as cookies, crackers, cereal, candy, and ice cream) until information becomes available about whether that product may be affected.
*People who think they may have become ill from eating peanut butter are advised to consult their health care providers.

People with any questions about the peanut butter recall can get information from the Centers for Disease Control or the Food and Drug Administration Web sites, or they may call the school district's Nutrition Services Department at 385-5900.
