G.I. Public Schools will resume serving peanut butter and peanut butter products

The Grand Island Public Schools Nutrition Services Department will begin serving peanut butter and peanut butter products to students on March 25.

All products containing peanut butter were removed from the school district's menu on Jan. 20 after the Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration issued a recall on all foods containing peanuts and peanut paste that was manufactured at the Peanut Corporation of America in Blakely, Ga.

The Nutrition Services Department removed peanut butter and peanut butter products as a safety precaution in January, even though peanut butter was not listed as a recalled product, said Kris Spellman, director of nutrition services for the Grand Island Public Schools.

The Nutrition Services Department has received information from the Department of Health and Human Services and the Food Distribution Program that the peanut butter and peanut butter products used by the district have been certified as being safe to serve.

The Nutrition Services Department will continue to refrain from serving any products containing peanut paste or peanut granules as an ingredient, Spellman said.
