G.I. Public Schools receives grants for artists-in-residence at three elementary schools

Grand Island Public Schools has received grants from the Nebraska Arts Council and Moonshell Arts and Humanities Council to help fund artists-in-residence at Gates, Dodge, and Shoemaker Elementary Schools.

The residencies are:
*Gates Elementary School, March 22-26, artist Nancy Fairbanks of Grand Island
*Dodge Elementary School, May 10-14, artist Karen Krull Robart of Shelton
*Shoemaker Elementary School, May 17-21, artist Nancy Fairbanks of Grand Island

Fairbanks will introduce basic pottery techniques to fourth-graders while sharing her knowledge of Pawnee Indian customs and will work once during the week with students in each of the school's other five grades at Gates and Shoemaker Elementary Schools. Robart will show Dodge students how to paint on fabrics to produce finished landscape pieces.

The Nebraska Arts Council is contributing $750, and Moonshell Arts and Humanities Council is providing $300 for the residencies. The schools and parent-teacher organizations will also provide financial support for the residencies.

The Nebraska Arts Council provides funding to Nebraska's nonprofit organizations for arts projects and programs in communities throughout the state. This financial support is made possible by funds appropriated by the Nebraska Legislature and through competitive grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. Nebraskans wishing to learn more about these grants should visit the NAC Web site at [ http://www.nebraskaartscouncil.org ]www.nebraskaartscouncil.org.

Moonshell Arts and Humanities Council fosters excellence in the arts and humanities in Nebraska's heartland through collaboration with allied organizations. More information about Moonshell is available on its Web site at www.moonshell.org.
