G.I. Public Schools middle school students selected for All-State Band

Three middle school students from the Grand Island Public Schools have been selected for the 2010 Nebraska State Bandmasters Association Eighth-Grade All-State Band.

Members of the 82-piece band were chosen through a taped audition where more than 400 eighth-graders from 76 schools submitted tapes.

Barr Middle School students who were selected for the All-State Band are Kyla Buettner, clarinet; Hannah Gilbertson, flute; and Carly Wahlmeier, clarinet. Only eight students who play the flute and 15 students who play the clarinet were selected for the All-State Band, said Lew Cole, band director at Barr Middle School.

Leigh Uhing, an eighth-grader at Westridge Middle School, was selected as an alternate for the All-State Band, said Terry Speed, Westridge's band director. Uhing plays the trumpet.

The All-State Band will perform at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at the University of Nebraska at Kearney's Fine Arts Building. The guest conductor will be John O'Reilly, an internationally known composer and clinician.
