G.I. Public Schools hosting open house for new Child Nutrition Center
Grand Island Public Schools will have a public open house for the school district's new Child Nutrition Center from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, at the Kneale Administration Building, 123 S. Webb Road.
Breakfasts and lunches for students at the school district's Early Learning Center and 14 elementary schools are prepared at the new state-of-the-art facility on the northeast side of the Kneale Administration Building, then transported by truck to the schools.
Some of students' favorite school cafeteria menu choices will be served at the open house, said Kris Spellman, Director of Nutrition Services for Grand Island Public Schools.
People attending the open house are asked to park in the main parking lot on the south side of the Kneale Administration Building and use the entrance labeled "Board Room," adjacent to Entrance "M," to enter the building.
The Child Nutrition Center covers 29,000 square feet and also has a 3,500 square foot dock area. Converting the former warehouse area to a centralized "kitchen" cost approximately $4.2 million, and equipment valued at approximately $1.8 million was installed.
Planning for the Child Nutrition Center began approximately seven years ago when school officials realized they were running out of space for storage and food preparation in each secondary school, where meals were also prepared for students at three or four elementary schools.
