G.I. Public Schools employees receive awards from G.I. Education Foundation

Four teachers, one education support staff member, and one administrator received awards from the Grand Island Education Foundation at an all-staff assembly Friday, Aug. 13, at Grand Island Senior High School's auditorium.

The Grand Island Education Foundation/Platte Valley State Bank awards were presented for Teacher of the Year, Staff Member of the Year, and Administrator of the Year. Employees selected from among 67 nominations were:

*Elementary School Teacher of the Year: Ryan Hansen, physical education teacher, Dodge Elementary School
*Middle School Teacher of the Year: Karen Hastings, social studies teacher, Westridge Middle School
*High School Teacher of the Year: Cheri Preister, special education teacher, Grand Island Senior High School
*Specialist/Counselor of the Year: Kris McMullen, community-based instruction coordinator, Grand Island Senior High School
*Education Support Staff Member of the Year: Paul Galles, custodian, Jefferson Elementary School
*Administrator of the Year: Maureen Oman, principal, Engleman Elementary School.

Each winner received a plaque and a $500 award underwritten by corporate sponsor Platte Valley State Bank.

Last spring, the Grand Island Education Foundation received nominations for the awards from students, parents, fellow teachers, and principals.

Nominees must be current teachers, specialists, counselors, or support staff members (such as secretaries, custodians, para-educators, and nutrition services staff) in Grand Island Public Schools. Six awards are available on an annual basis.

Nomination forms are available on Grand Island Public Schoolsí website, www.gips.org/foundation/teachers-of-the-year, and at the Kneale Administration Building, 123 S. Webb Road.
