G.I. Public Schools and Heartland United Way sponsoring 5K run/walk

Grand Island Public Schools and Heartland United Way are sponsoring a 5K run/walk and a one-mile run/walk on Saturday, May 21, at Stuhr Museum, 3133 W. Highway 34.

The family-friendly event will occur at Stuhr Museum, including Railroad Town. Parking will be available in the Central Community College parking lot on the north side of Highway 34.

The event features a one-mile run/walk for students in elementary schools or younger and a 5K run/walk.

The registration fee is $5 per person for any Grand Island Public Schools employee or student and $10 per person for others. Each participant who submits a completed registration form and fee by May 9 will receive a race T-shirt. The registration fee is $5 more per person after May 9. Participants who register after May 9 may not receive a T-shirt.

The one-mile run/walk begins at 8 a.m. May 21, and the 5K run/walk begins at 8:30 a.m. May 21. Prizes will be offered in each run/walk division (elementary and younger, Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8, Grades 9-12, and ages 19 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, and 60 and above). Each age or grade category will have one division for males and one division for females. The school with the highest percentage of student/staff participation will receive special recognition. The award presentation begins at 9:30 a.m. May 21.

Run/walk packets for participants may be picked up between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday, May 20, at Barr Middle School, 602 W. Stolley Park Road; or between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at the registration site at Central Community College.

The Grand Island YMCA is assisting Grand Island Public Schools with organizing the event.
