G.I. Public Schools 7th-graders will participate in NASA teleconference to create space exploration vehicle
Grand Island Public Schools High Ability Learner (HAL) students in seventh grade will participate in teleconferences with a NASA education consultant on Dec. 20 and Dec. 21 to create a model for a crew exploration vehicle, said Lori Toepfer, a Barr Middle School integration specialist.
The teleconferences will start at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 20, and 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, in the media center at Barr Middle School, 602 W. Stolley Park Road.
The students are participating in the HAL "Mysterious Beyond" seminar from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Dec. 20 and Dec. 21 at the school. Approximately 26 students will participate on Dec. 20, and approximately 28 students will participate on Dec. 21, Toepfer said. The students are from Barr, Walnut, and Westridge Middle Schools.
Students are studying exploration of the planet Mars and will be challenged by a NASA education consultant to create a model for a crew exploration vehicle, which is a new spacecraft for human space exploration. This is the third year that the seminar on Mars has been offered in the school district, Toepfer said.
Students will build a "Pathfinder" that will be dropped from the third floor at Barr Middle School to see if the payload (an egg) survives. After the teleconference, students will work in teams to create a crew exploration vehicle for a manned trip to Mars. They will create a model and prepare a presentation to give to NASA in January 2011.
