G.I. Education Foundation schedules news conference

The Grand Island Education Foundation will have a news conference at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, May 13, at Walnut Middle School to announce the results from the seventh annual "Add it Up to Opportunity!" staff and board member fund drive.

The news conference will be in Walnut Middle School's Wildcat Island commons area just inside the main doors. Walnut Middle School is located at 1600 N. Custer Ave.

The results of this year's campaign have been dubbed "over-the-top" by Foundation Executive Director Traci Skalberg. The campaign included a $4,000 challenge gift from Leigh Lillibridge State Farm Insurance. This challenge gift was used to match all new and sustained staff gifts to the campaign.

Additionally, Leigh Lillibridge State Farm Insurance issued an 1,100 donor challenge to the staff. If 1,100 staff members gave to the campaign, Leigh Lillibridge State Farm Insurance would give an additional $1,100.

The campaign ran from March 22 to April 23. Skalberg said each year she is "amazed at the response of the teachers and staff of Grand Island Public Schools. They really come out and show their commitment to students through this campaign. It really is above and beyond the call of duty." She called the campaign "an unbelievable source of pride for Grand Island."

Last year staff and board members of Grand Island Public Schools and Education Foundation raised $59,000 for the benefit of school district students. More than 1,000 donors participated.

Proceeds from the campaign were used to expand Foundation programs such as the Academic Aristocrat Scholarship program and the Teacher of the Year program. The funds were also used to support Foundation operations and endowment and a Classroom Mini-Grant program. During the 2009-2010 school year, the Foundation awarded 15 mini-grants to classrooms across the district that provided approximately 3,000 students with additional educational opportunities not available through the school budget.
