Former foreign exchange student will attend G.I. Senior High School Class of 1960 reunion
If Grand Island Senior High School's Class of 1960 gives an award to the person who has traveled the greatest distance to attend their 50th reunion June 25 to June 27, it won't be hard to determine who will get the award.
Nazan (Bakirci) Erten of Istanbul, Turkey, will attend the Class of 1960 reunion, said Rogene (Rembolt) Bainbridge of Grand Island, one of her high school classmates.
Erten was a foreign exchange student during the 1959-1960 school year and attended Grand Island Senior High School, Bainbridge said. Erten lived with the family of Linda (Johnson) Clancy, a 1961 Islander graduate. The Class of 1960 was able to invite Erten to the reunion because Clancy had her contact information.
The Class of 1959 and Class of 1960 raised money so that the school could have foreign exchange students through the American Field Service Program, Bainbridge said. Erten and a boy from Germany (now deceased) were the exchange students during 1959-1960. Erten called last week to say she would attend the 50th reunion.
Bainbridge said these events are planned for the Class of 1960's 50th reunion:
*8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, June 25: Gathering at Riverside Golf Club. Food from the Coney Island in downtown Grand Island and Nifty's sandwiches will be served.
*9 a.m. Saturday, June 26: Tour of Grand Island Senior High School.
*11 a.m. Saturday, June 27: Tour of the Grand Theater
*1 p.m. Saturday, June 27: Women's luncheon at Riverside Golf Club while male classmates golf.
*6 p.m. Saturday, June 27: Dinner at the Saddle Club. The Quidons, a well-known Grand Island rock 'n roll band from the early 1960s, will perform.
*9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, June 28: Breakfast at the Midtown Holiday Inn.
