Fifth-grade girls compete in Basketball Bonanza

Grand Island Public Schools fifth-grade students competed in the Girls Basketball Bonanza Jan. 26 at Grand Island Senior High School.

Students participated in a variety of basketball skills tests and shooting games.

The skills tests include free throw shooting, 30-second continuous shooting, 30-second dribble/shooting, and 30-second hot shot shooting. Results were determined for competition in two sites: the Middle Gym and East Gym at the high school.

Results from the Girls Basketball Bonanza from the two sites are:

Middle Gym Competition

*Free Throws (10 shots total): 1 (tie), Emma Reilly, Gates; Ashleigh Beberniss, Knickrehm; and Jazmine Krueger, Wasmer, all with 5; 2, Carley Benson, Engleman, 4; 3-5 (tie), Emily Herbek, Shoemaker; Valeria Veliz-Rodriguez, Gates; Makaylah Eckel, Newell; Hunter Price, Newell; Alicia Chase, Wasmer; Berenice Saenz, Knickrehm; Brittny Harness, Knickrehm; Lorena Martinez, Lincoln; Andrea Prado, Knickrehm; and Christine Hernandez, Lincoln, all with 3.

*30-Second Shooting Test: 1, Lorena Martinez, Lincoln, 12; 2-3 (tie), Carley Benson, Engleman; and Andrea Prado, Knickrehm; both with 8; 4-5 (tie), Emily Herbek, Shoemaker; and Hunter Price, Newell; both with 7.

*Dribble and Shoot Test: 1-2 (tie), Anette Peinado, Lincoln; and Lorena Martinez, Lincoln; both with 16; 3 (tie), Brittny Harness, Knickrehm; and Mariela Ramirez, Howard; both with 15; 4-5 (tie), Andrea Prado, Knickrehm; and Corinne Witter, West Lawn; both with 14.
*30-Second Hot Shot Test: 1, Carley Benson, Engleman, 10; 2, MaKaylah Eckel, Newell, 9; 3, Chasity Sebesta, Newell, 8; 4-5 (tie), Emily Colby, West Lawn; Emily Herbek, Shoemaker; Ashleigh Beberniss, Knickrehm; Christine Hernandez, Lincoln; Valeria Veliz-Rodriguez, Gates; and Autumn Beck, West Lawn; all with 7.

East Gym Competition

*Free Throws (10 shots total): 1-3 (tie), Mariela Morales, Lincoln; Jocelyn Walford, Seedling Mile; and Sadie Goering, Gates, all with 7; 4-5 (tie), Maddi Jussel, Engleman; and Desarae Dramse, Newell; both with 6.

*30-Second Shooting Test: 1, Jocelyn Walford, Seedling Mile, 14; 2-3 (tie), Taylor Wieland, Engleman; and Molly Magana, Lincoln; both with 12; 4-5 (tie), Alyssa Vanosdall, Engleman; Maddi Jussel, Engleman; Sadie Goering, Gates; Brooke McCallum, Stolley Park; Blair Benton, Stolley Park; Peyton Evers, Shoemaker; Lizzie Waters, Gates; Brookly Metz, Gates; Justice Ritz, Newell; and Morgan Haverluck, Dodge; all with 10.

*Dribble and Shoot Test: 1-3 (tie), Sadie Goering, Gates; Peyton Evers, Shoemaker; and Brooke McCallum, Stolley Park; all with 16; 4-5 (tie), Blair Benton, Stolley Park; and Jocelyn Walford, Seedling Mile; both with 15.

*30-Second Hot Shot Test: 1-3 (tie), Sadie Goering, Gates; Brookly Metz, Gates; and Brianna Aguilar, Newell; all with 10; 4-5 (tie), Faith Swanberg, Newell; and Blair Benton, Stolley Park; both with 8.
