Family Literacy classes start in January
The Grand Island Public Schools Welcome Center is sponsoring a series
of five monthly Family Literacy classes, beginning Jan. 29.
The
classes are designed for English Language Learner children (infants
through middle school students) and their parents, but anyone may
attend, said Welcome Center Coordinator Joanne Garrison. The free
classes will occur at the Grand Island Public Schools Administration
Building, 123 S. Webb Road.
"There is a wealth of research
evidence that demonstrates the positive benefits of family involvement
in children's education," Garrison said.
At each class, a
presentation on a featured topic, an English mini-lesson, time for
parents and children to interact, and a craft activity will be offered.
A nutritious snack will also be served.
The class times, dates, and topics scheduled are:
* 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29: preparing for parent teacher conferences.
* 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7: holiday extravaganza.
* 2:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27: reading with your child.
* 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 12: talking with your child.
* 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, March 24: fun with letters and sounds.
People may pre-register for Family Literacy classes by calling the Grand Island Public Schools Welcome Center at 385-5551.
