Events planned to celebrate Islander stadium's new "Real Grass" turf

Several events are planned Aug. 27 and Aug. 28 at Grand Island Senior High School's Memorial Stadium to celebrate completion of the installation of "Real Grass" turf on the stadium's field, Activities Director Joe Kutlas said.

All Grand Island Senior High School students and "Islander Nation" fans are invited to a rally at 8 p.m. Aug. 27 at Memorial Stadium, located south of the high school at 2124 N. Lafayette Ave. Chicago comedian Mike Toomey will perform. Islander cheerleaders will lead a pep rally and cheer "practice." High school students will compete in games on the new field. The Islander Marching Band and Islandaire Dance Team will also perform.

The high school is also inviting the community to participate in its "Football Friday" by attending a tailgate party at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 28 and cheering for the Islander football team against the Kearney Bearcats, with kickoff at 7 p.m. Aug. 28.

The Aug. 28 tailgate party will on the east side of Memorial Stadium and will feature a U.S. Army rock climbing wall, "Undie 500" tricycle races, free T-shirts for 200 fans, giant inflatable games for children provided by Coca-Cola, prizes donated by local merchants, a long golf drive competition, trivia contests, and more. KSYZ is hosting the tailgate party, Kutlas said. Whiskey Creek will have barbecue menu items for sale at the concession stand.

People attending the football game are encouraged to wear purple to show their Islander pride.

Kick-off for the football game is 7 p.m. Aug. 28. Admission prices are $5 for adults, $3 for students, and no charge for preschool children. The Islander Marching Band and Islander Dance Team will again perform.

Islander fans will have the opportunity on Aug. 28 to step onto the "Real Grass" turf, which is the same turf that the Dallas Cowboys use. The Grand Island stadium is the only one in the state with "Real Grass" turf.
