Engleman Elementary School parents to install playground equipment

Parents of Engleman Elementary School students will install playground equipment at the school's new site at 1812 Mansfield Road on Sept. 20 and Sept. 21, Principal Maureen Oman said.

More than 30 parents have volunteered each day to help place the new equipment north of the school, said Amy Ostdiek, a member of the school's Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) who led the committee to raise funding for the play structure.

"We are hoping that this number grows and that we have closer to 50 volunteers both days," Ostdiek said. "We are excited about the completion of this project."

The parents will work from approximately 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 20 and from 8 a.m. until completion on Sept. 21, Ostdiek said.
The PTO has hired two people from the playground equipment company to supervise the installation of the playground, Ostdiek said. One is a certified playground safety inspector who has supervised more than 300 playground installations by volunteers in the last 10 years. School district staff members are also involved in the installation project.

Parents organized the efforts because there was no playground equipment at 1812 Mansfield Road, the former location of Westridge Middle School. Engleman students will begin attending classes at the renovated building at 1812 Mansfield Road in 2009. Only a few pieces of playground equipment can be moved from Engleman's current playground to the new site, which will be done after students after students begin attending classes at the new site.

Money for the equipment was raised from a variety of sources, including fund-raisers, donations from parents and local businesses, and grants. Total cost of the project is $33,500, Ostdiek said.
