Dodge Elementary School students receive awards in writing contest

Ten Dodge Elementary School students were finalists or received honorable mention awards in the Young Voices Foundation "Rewrite Mom and Dad" contest for elementary school students.

The Grand Island youth were fifth-grade students in teacher Kathryn Decker's class during the 2008-09 school year.

Students were asked to write up to a 1,000-word fiction story about a day when aliens from outer space visit their neighborhood, turn their parents into pets, and turn their pets into parents for a day.

Contest entries were due May 4. First- through third-place winners, 14 finalists, and 16 honorable mention students were recognized.

The three Dodge students who were finalists were Reece Maske, Stephanie Ajtum, and Nathan Grantzinger. Dodge students who received honorable mention awards were Devin Miles, Zach Harper, Jordan Oliva, Kevin Baharian, Myesha Mora, Ivette Gurrola, and Alondra Zapata.

The students' stories can be viewed on Dodge Elementary School's Web site at:  www.gips.org/Projects_Dodge/Writing_Contest/Introduction.html
