Dodge Elementary School students promoting Earth Hour observance
Dodge Elementary School students are participating in the third annual Earth Hour from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, March 28.
The event was started three years ago in Australia to encourage people to turn off their lights to reduce global warming, Principal Stephanie Schulte said.
Last year, cities in 14 states participated. No groups in Nebraska have participated until this year.
Students have watched a video about Earth Hour 2009. After watching the video, Dodge students in kindergarten through second grade created animation projects. Some of the students' work is posted on Dodge's Web site at
www.gips.org/dodge/student-projects/Earth-Hour
Students in several classes are promoting it by telling five people about it. Students have also sent letters to people such as their City Council representatives, city Fire Department staff members, and restaurant owners. All Grand Island Public Schools staff members were notified about participating in Earth Hour through an e-mail from a Dodge teacher.
More information about Earth Hour is available on the Internet at
