Dodge Elementary School hosting artist-in-residence
Omaha artist Michael Fitzsimmons will conduct a five-day residency at Dodge Elementary School from May 11 through May 15.
Fitzsimmons is focusing on working with fifth-graders. He will also spend approximately 30 minutes during the week with students in each of these grades: kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, and fourth grade.
Students will participate in activities including exploring rhythms with hand-constructed drums, exploring "found sounds" from their environment, creating their own instruments, and learning traditional multicultural rhythms. They will also be introduced to the sounds of multicultural percussion instruments such as hand drums, frame drums, shakers, bells, and woodblocks.
A grant from the Nebraska Arts Council is supporting the residency. Dodge Elementary School's Parent-Teacher Organization is also contributing financial support for the residency. Dodge teachers Pam Shunkwiler and Shawn Jacobs are the school coordinators for the project. Carol Bryant, grant development facilitator for the school district, prepared the grant application.
The Nebraska Arts Council grants funding to Nebraska's nonprofit organizations for arts projects and programs in communities throughout the state. This financial support is made possible by funds appropriated by the Nebraska Legislature and through competitive grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. Nebraskans wishing to learn more about these grants should visit the NAC Web site at www.nebraskaartscouncil.org.
