'Doc Gizmo' giving science presentation at Westridge Middle School

The Doc Gizmo Science Theatre is coming to Westridge Middle School on Thursday, April 9, said Kay Davis, a science teacher at Westridge Middle School.

Phil "Doc Gizmo" Arnold of Wichita, Kan., will present a series of approximately 20 science demonstrations for Westridge students from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. April 9 in Westridge's auditorium.

Arnold and his wife, Susan, developed the program to show students that science can be exciting and fun.

Phil Arnold has given more than 760 presentations to more than 170,000 students in Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma during the past nine years. Arnold is from Maize, Kan., and his wife, Susan Arnold, teaches at Maize High School. She has been recognized by Kansas State University as an outstanding high school chemistry teacher in Kansas.

They have written a notebook called "Gimmicks, Gizmos, and Discrepant Events" containing descriptions collection of more than 160 demonstrations and classroom activities. A copy of the notebook is given to each school where they present a program. Discrepant events are science events that sometimes may not do just what you think should be happening.
