Concert scheduled for Fifth-Grade Honor Choir
The Grand Island Public Schools Fifth-Grade Honor Choir will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, May 8, at College Park, said Director Larry Decker.
The Honor Choir is comprised of 33 fifth-grade students representing nine elementary schools. There is no admission charge for the May 8 concert, which is open to the public. Decker is a vocal music teacher at Gates and Stolley Park Elementary Schools.
Students sing a variety of music styles, Decker said.
Barb Mueller is the Honor Choir's accompanist.
The Fifth-Grade Honor Choir will also perform at six schools on Thursday, May 7. The times and locations for the May 7 school performances are: 8:45 a.m., Barr Middle School; 9:55 a.m., Walnut Middle School; 11 a.m., Westridge Middle School; 12:45 p.m., Knickrehm Elementary School; 1:30 p.m., Howard Elementary School; and 2:15 p.m., Dodge Elementary School.
The Honor Choir started in the late 1970s and initially featured fifth- and sixth-graders. Decker began directing the Honor Choir in 1983, and in 1989, the choir was selected to perform in Lincoln for the State convention of the Nebraska Choral Directors. He directed the choir for 13 years until resigning in 1997. When the school district switched to middle schools in the 1996-97 school year, Honor Choir members were selected from fifth-graders. After Cheryl Schuett retired as the director last year, Decker resumed directing the group.
