Community celebration planned to celebrate Islanders’ 3rd straight state wrestling title
Grand Island Senior High School is hosting a community celebration at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, in the school’s West Gym to honor the Islanders’ wrestling team, which won its third straight Class A state championship Feb. 19.
The event is open to the public, said Joe Kutlas, activities director at the high school.
Four Islander wrestlers finished first in their weight divisions at the state tournament: Trey Trujillo (112 pounds), Andrew Riedy (130), Carlos Rodriguez (140), and Michael Bolan (145).
Seven other Islanders earned medals: Dante Rodriguez (second, 103); Tanner McClaren (third, 119); Luke McGregor (fifth, 125); Billy Leetch (third, 152); Jeff Brisbin (fifth, 171); Coleman Westerby (second, 189); and Daniel Sotelo (third, 285). Islanders Marcus Peterson (135) and Pierce Fiala (160) also qualified for the state tournament but were not medalists.
